2 Heffernan, “Geography, Cartography and Military Intelligence”, p518. A sense of the difficulties faced by the Society is provided by some remarks by Douglas Freshfield in his Address at the Anniversary General Meeting: “During the course of last summer we were able to give some help to the Intelligence Division of the Admiralty War Staff, whose quick appreciation of the resources of our library and map collection led in a short time to an urgent request that we should give room in our house for the establishment there of a special branch of this division. Under the charge of Dr. Dickson, a member of our Council, the work done by this branch has greatly increased, and the encroachments made upon our accommodation have been limited only by our refusal to deprive our Fellows of the one remaining room upon the first floor.” Douglas W. Freshfield, “Address at the Anniversary Meeting 21 May 1917”, The Geographical Journal, vol. 48, 1917, pp2-3. For contemporary accounts of the work of the Society during the war and in the Conference which followed see B. B. Cubitt, “War Work of the Society”, The Geographical Journal, vol. 53, no. 5, May 1919, pp336-39, and Anon, “Geography at the Congress of Paris 1919”, The Geographical Journal, vol. 55, no. 4, April 1920, pp309-12.
